Little Shop of Horrors

Lakeside Community Theatre

On Skid Row, shy florist Seymour Krelborn discovers a mysterious plant he names Audrey II after his crush, Audrey. The strange plant brings fame and fortune to the failing flower shop, but it has a sinister secret: it feeds on human blood. As Audrey II grows, Seymour is driven to commit murder to keep it alive, hoping to win Audrey’s love. Ultimately, Seymour realizes the plant’s plan for world domination, but his attempts to destroy it come too late, and the monstrous Audrey II triumphs.

Seymour Krelborn
Tenor

Tragic anti-hero. A sweet but insecure orphan who dreams of a better life. He’s easily manipulated by the promise of fame, love, and success. His moral decline is central to the plot. He goes from feeding the plant his blood to committing murder. He represents the “everyman” caught in a system that rewards exploitation and punishes integrity.

Audrey
Mezzo-Soprano, belt

Kind, tender, and tragically self-deprecating. She’s stuck in an abusive relationship but dreams of “somewhere that’s green” (a safe, loving home). Despite her trauma, she radiates hope and empathy. Her arc is heartbreaking: she sees Seymour as her way out, but the toxic system consumes her too.

Mr. Mushnik
Baritone

Runs the failing flower shop. He takes Seymour in like a son, but his affection is clearly transactional. He serves as a symbol of small-business capitalism, initially sympathetic, but quick to betray for personal gain. His moral line is murky: manipulative, but not evil.

Audrey II
Baritone / Bass, soul / funk / R&B style

A sentient, alien plant that feeds on human blood. It starts small and persuasive but becomes increasingly powerful and demanding. It manipulates Seymour with promises of success. Symbolically, Audrey II represents capitalism, greed, and the consuming nature of unchecked ambition.

Audrey II Puppeteer
Open to any SATB voice part, not a soloist

A sentient, alien plant that feeds on human blood. It starts small and persuasive but becomes increasingly powerful and demanding. It manipulates Seymour with promises of success. Symbolically, Audrey II represents capitalism, greed, and the consuming nature of unchecked ambition. May also play a wino and other characters in Act I.

Orin Scrivello, D.D.S.
High Baritone / Tenor, rock

Analysis: Audrey’s abusive, narcissistic dentist boyfriend. Orin enjoys causing pain (literally and emotionally) and is a caricature of male dominance. He’s a bully who has found societal permission to torture others under the guise of a respectable profession. He is a crucial catalyst for Seymour’s first act of moral compromise.

Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon
Mezzo-Soprano Trio, tight Motown harmonies

These women serve as a Motown-style Greek chorus. They exist inside and outside the action, sometimes commenting, sometimes participating. They are streetwise, charismatic, and function as the show’s tone-setters. They also provide insight into the themes of poverty, survival, and consequence.
